- Date: A CUSO Seminar at University of Fribourg, 19 to 20 December 2018
- Location: Boulevard de Pérolles 90, Fribourg, room PER salle B205
Description
When the complexity of a system increases, our ability of describing it in a precise way diminishes. At some point there will be a trade-off between precision and relevance, so for complex systems a fuzzy description contains more relevant information about it than a crisp, full, detailed description of it, making it more effective for the understanding of the system. The theory of fuzzy modeling consists in mathematical methods allowing the modelisation of systems based on their relevant information expressed through natural language, fuzzy formal logic, fuzzy approximation and fuzzy relations.
The seminar is dedicated to reflection on the importance of efficient representation of incomplete and imprecise information resulting from the difficulty - or in many cases the impossibility - of acquiring complete knowledge of a system. In addition, the size of the information gained from the complete knowledge of an extremely large system cannot be understood by humans and must therefore be simplified and fuzzified. The first part of the seminar focuses on the theory of fuzzy modeling as a solution to gain insight into complex systems. In the second part of the seminar, practical applications of fuzzy modelling and of the fuzzy transform (F-transform) on control and decision-making, image processing and time series analysis and forecasting are presented, showing possible real-world use cases of the presented theory.

Professor Vilém Novák, PhD, DSc., is a director of the Institute for Research and Applications of Fuzzy Modeling of the University of Ostrava, Czech Republic. This institute exists already 22 years and is one of very few research institutions in the world focusing on the topic of fuzzy modeling. Novák obtained his PhD in mathematical logic at the Charles University, Prague, in 1988, his DSc. (Doctor of Sciences) in computer science at the Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw, in 1995 and a full professorship at the Masaryk University, Brno, in 2001. His research activities include mathematical fuzzy logic, approximate reasoning, mathematical modeling of linguistic semantics, fuzzy control and various kinds of applications of fuzzy modeling. He is one of the founders of the mathematical fuzzy logic. He was general chair of the VIIth IFSA'97 World Congress that took place in Prague in 1997 and also of 5th EUSFLAT 2007 conference that took place in Ostrava in 2007. He is member of editorial boards of several journals and guest editor of many special issues of these journals. He is often invited to give plenary talks at international conferences and to give lectures in universities all over the world. He is author or co-author of over 270 scientific papers, 5 monographs and 2 edited monographs. He was awarded at the International FLINS 2010 Conference in China and also as IFSA fellow in 2017 for his scientific achievements. A list of his publications and further information can be found at http//irafm.osu.cz/.

Professor Irina Perfilieva, Ph.D., received the degrees of M.S. (1975) and Ph.D (1980) in Applied Mathematics from the Lomonosov State University in Moscow, Russia. At present, she is full professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Ostrava, Czech Republic. At the same time, she is Head of the Theoretical Research Department at the University of Ostrava, Institute for Research and Applications of Fuzzy Modeling. She is the author and co-author of six books on mathematical principles of fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic and their applications, she is an editor of many special issues of scientific journals. She has published over 270 papers in the area of multi-valued logic, fuzzy logic, fuzzy approximation and fuzzy relation equations. Her scientific research is internationally recognized. She is an area editor of IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems and International Journal of Computational Intelligence Systems, and an editorial board member of the following journals Fuzzy Sets and Systems, Iranian Journal of Fuzzy Systems, Journal of Uncertain Systems, Journal of Intelligent Technologies and Applied Statistics, Fuzzy Information and Engineering. She works as a member of Program Committees of the most prestigious International Conferences and Congresses in the area of fuzzy and knowledge-based systems. For her long-term scientific achievements, she was awarded on the International FLINS 2010 Conference on Foundations and Applications of Computational Intelligence. She received the memorial Da Ruan award for the best paper at FLINS 2012. In 2013, she was elected to be an EUSFLAT Honorary Member. She got a special award of the Seoul International Inventions Fair 2010. She has two patents. Her scientific interests lie in the area of applied mathematics and mathematical modeling where she successfully uses modern as well as classical approaches. During the last five years she was working in the area of image processing and pattern recognition. A list of her publications and further information can be found at http//irafm.osu.cz/.
